St. John the Baptist Church

In the nearby town of Alcalà de Xivert town, we find this great Baroque building Valenciano. The image of the Archangel Michael can be found guarding the top of its facade. Inside the church we can find the museum with some pieces recovered from the looting of 1936.

Belfry

Named the highest tower of Valencia and the most emblematic monument of Alcalá, is located to the right of the church of San Juan Bautista. The image of Santa Barbara is located on the top decorating the access gate and at its peak the image of San Juan Bautista.

Chapel of the Virgin of the Helpless

Chapel dedicated to the patron saint of the town. Around it acts are celebrated in his honor on the second Sunday of May. Built in two phases, first between 1705 and 1709, and later enlarged and remodelled in 1863.

Door and Well of San Juan

Like many other towns of the Valencian coast, Alcalà de Xivert was the victim of an attack by pirates. They entered the city, setting fire to the door of San Juan, but the brave villagers managed to resist and expelled them. In his honor the Well of San Juan was built and on it, there a stone plaque where it is written the feat.

Casa de la Culture

This building, located across the street Lady of the Forsaken, was for centuries the chapter house and the ground floor housed the prison. The style is Renaissance, with a masonry facade and Gothic arching. Today it is the venue for cultural activities, the Public Library and the School of Music.

Castle Xivert

A fortress of Islamic origin between the tenth and eleventh centuries later reformed in the thirteenth century, at the top of the Sierra de Irta because of its strategic advantage at the time. Because of its varied occupation for many years, you can clearly distinguish two areas: the Arabic and the Christian.

Chapel of St. Lucia and St. Benet

On one of the foothills of the Sierra de Irta and 312 metres above sea level, we find this seventeenth century chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia and San Benito. It has a well marked trail to the summit to visit by foot. Its elevated position facing the sea makes it a chapel with exceptional views.

Prigó del Rey

A stone monument built in honor of King Carlos IV of Spain in November 1802 who visited the area with his wife and children. The site is where a statue in his honour. It is located at 2 km away from the town, as this is where the Monarch was wagered during a hunt.

Ermita de San Antonio

Ermita situated 10 km outside Alcocéber and close to San Miguel River. In humble surroundings and close to the beach. They say that in 1690 a neighbour found an image of San Antonio de Padua in the same place but it was washed away. In 1773 they built a shrine in his honour.

Cap i Corb Tower

Is one of the ancient watchtowers which served to control and alert potential attacks from the sea. With a height of 13 metres, it was built in 1427 at the mouth of the San Miguel River. Today it is part of a private property and maintains some of its original form.

Ebrí Tower

At 500 metres above sea level and with a height of 8.5metres is located in the Sierra de Irta. This tower is from the sixteenth century. Formerly part of a system of alert and watchtower the Xivert Castle guarded against attacks from the sea. Currently it is, next to the Cap i Corb and San Benito, one of the few towers still standing.

Calvary Chapel

Down a cypress lined road and about 400 metres from the village is located the chapel of the Valenciano Baroque. It´s construction began in 1727, finishing in 1779. It is built in a natural environment and visited on weekends where you have picnic areas with tables, benches, barbecue facilities, etc.

Natural Park Sierra de Irta

It is more than 15 kilometres in area where you can enjoy the Mediterranean vegetation and wildlife, with small coves, cliffs and the sea. In this natural park there are numerous routes that you can take and see the nature of the mountains besides visiting its numerous buildings of great cultural interest. You can also see several interesting routes in our section of trails in Alcocéber.

Columbretes Islands Nature Reserve

Set of volcanic islands located halfway between the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. They are divided into 4 groups of islands named as the largest in each group: l'illa Grossa, the only inhabited, Ferrera, Foradada and Carallot. Among the wide variety of wildlife and vegetation that inhabit the islands you can find some protected species or unique presence in the world, like Columbretes lizard. This reserve is of special interest for diving enthusiasts since its seabed present a great variety of species, including some very rare in our seas, such as red coral.

Peñíscola

Just 31 km from Alcocéber you find the beautiful town of Peñíscola, which highlights the Papa Luna Castle, built by the Templars and was Head for the Pontifical Pope and his walled old town. Discover a path through the old town of Peñíscola and see the main sights of the city.

Les Palmes Desert

This natural park is located just 35km from Alcocéber. Dubbed the Carmelite desert, because it was was a lonely and isolated area, it presents abundant vegetation, especially palms. In addition to its rich landscape has several ruins and constructions of interest including the Miravet Castle, Castle Montornés, the old castle or the chapels of Les Santes and Magdalena.
